Batik Making and Ikat

Tohpati is the centre of handicrafts like Batik and Ikat. On our “Handicraft” day tour in Bali, which we organised ourselves, but was a bit hijacked by the driver we had, who took us to the places he knew (and probably got commission for!). Instead going to a Batik shop, as I planned, we visited a Batik factory, where we got a demonstration of the Batik making from the scratch. This was fascinating – from the weaving of the cloth, to the preparation of the dyes and and hand painting/embroidery. Regrettably the prices for the stuff in the factory outlet were outrageous, even if it was just beautiful! In this factory, there was also the weaving corner for the Ikat cloth.
